I am Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Cinema Studies at the University of Oregon as well as the editor-in-chief of the journal Comparative Literature.

My research explores the transnational and intercultural circulation of literature, film, and media, with particular attention to Africa and the Middle East.

I am the author of In the Shadow of World Literature (Princeton 2016) and the forthcoming Cinema Before the World: The Global Route of the Lumière Brothers (Fordham 2026). I have also co-edited with Zeina G. Halabi the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to Modern Arabic Literature (Cambridge 2026).
